LINGUA FRANCA - A language used for communication between speakers of different native languages.
Examples:
*Many languages spoken in a particular area or amongst different ethnic groups and they need a language to communicate
*There is a trade between two different countries that have no common language
*At a professional conference for experts from different countries who have different native languages
ENGLISH AS A LINGUA FRANCA (ELF) - English is the current lingua franca of international business, education, diplomacy, entertainment and radio etc. The widespread use of ELF can be related back to the colonial power of the British Empire.
PIDGINS - They are non-native lingua francas, developed when speakers of different languages come into contact and need to communicate.
Typical traits:
*They have no native speakers
*Arise quickly for functional communication
*Compromise between 2+ languages
*Simple vocabulary from 'dominant' group and their language
*Simplified grammar of native language
*Begin as restricted (used only for certain functions) -> others become extended (used for all areas of life). Extended pidgins can be passed down to generation from generation as non-native lingua francas.
